Here’s some important Well Circle vocabulary and how At The Wells defines these terms.

Women

As an organization, At The Well is accepting of all bodies, regardless of a person’s race, class, ability, religious affiliation, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression. Because the female body experience is central to our work, and much of it was created by those who identify as cis-women, you’ll see gender-specific words in our materials including “woman,” “women,” “she,” and “her.” Nonetheless, we aspire to bring a wide range of perspectives on body and gender identity into our offerings as we grow. We believe it’s the sole choice of those starting a Well Circle to find a way to approach gender inclusion that feels safe, authentic, and comfortable for them.

Rosh Chodesh (The “First of the Month”)

Rosh Chodesh refers to the new moon, and the first day of the month according to the 12-month Hebrew calendar. In the Torah, G-d’s first commandment to the Jewish people was to mark time by the new moon. Traditionally, we know that Rosh Chodesh was a celebratory time for women to gather; however, we don't really know what that looked like because there’s such little documentation of these ancient women-led practices! Today, At The Well is reinvigorating this concept of Rosh Chodesh by empowering women around the world to create their own new moon gatherings called Well Circles.

The Hebrew Calendar

The Hebrew Calendar has 12-months and operates according to the lunar cycle. Each month comes along with its own spiritual energy and intentions that are associated with the seasons and Jewish holidays that occur throughout that month. Read our Moon Manuals to find out more!

Moon Manuals

Moon Manuals are thoughtfully crafted monthly publications by At The Well. They include teachings on Jewish wisdom and women’s health, activities, recipes, and rituals you can use to facilitate meaningful gatherings. Find all our Moon Manuals here, or sign up to receive them by email each month.

Rotating-Leadership Model

Well Circles operate according to a shared, rotating leadership model. This means that one woman from your Well Circle will lead each meeting, one will host, and the next month you choose another pair of folks to do the same. This way, all members feel a sense of ownership, and there are two people responsible for the evening - partners, who can look to each other for support before, during, and after your Well Circle meets.
