Well Circle FAQ

Answering the Most Common Questions About Well Circles

I’ve never led anything Jewish, does that really matter?

Nope! At The Well’s got you covered with Jewish resources and suggested activities in our Moon Manuals, so you can step in, lead, and discuss with your peers. We believe that a central part of the Jewish experience is being willing to learn as we go!

What makes At The Well different from other women's group organizations?

We’re rooted in ancestral wisdom and Judaism rituals in a way that is inclusive to our peers and anyone else who wants to use these teachings.

How many people are typically in a Well Circle?

We think 8-12 is the sweet spot so that the facilitator and hosts can rotate without putting a monthly burden on 1-2 people. That said, there are many Well Circle formations, and it’s whatever works best for you! As long as you commit to being there for each other, the number doesn't totally matter.

How long is a typical Well Circle gathering?

About two hours, not including prep, dinner, or clean up time.

What actually happens in a Circle?

We use the theme of the Hebrew month as the basis for conversation then the facilitator leads the group through a discussion and some kind of exercise (often using creative-modalities like art or movement) in order to learn, dialogue, reflect, and grow with each other.

What can I expect to get out of being in a Well Circle?

Hear from Jacky in Austin TX, who started with this same question. Ultimately, there wasn’t a pre-existing Well Circle for Jacky to join, so she found two friends who were also interested, and they built their Well Circle together.

Is it okay to have an “open Well Circle” and let new people come every time?

We strongly encourage you to make it closed because when it’s open, there isn’t the same sense of commitment or trust. When it’s closed, there is a greater sense of belonging and a deepening of relationships. But if you are in a community where open works, go for it; however it will require a different leadership model.

Do Circles have to meet IRL?

No, they don’t! Check out our resources for Virtual Circles to get you going.

Does it cost money to join a Circle?

No, it does not; however there are costs related to hosting a Well Circle (e.g. food or activity supplies), and we recommend splitting these costs.

Do I have to be Jewish to join or make a Circle?

Nope! There are plenty of women who do not identify as Jewish who join or start Well Circles. Learn more on how to create an interfaith Well Circle.
