Almost every Jewish holiday starts with lighting a candle, and Shabbat is no exception. But instead of just leaving a pair on the mantle, what if you took a couple-o-flames on a field trip to someplace a little more exciting... like, say, the bedroom?

Ancient Jewish teachings say that on Shabbat, from sunset to sunset, Jews have the privilege and pleasure of temporarily housing inside their bodies a whole second soul. It is said, that the purpose of this additional soul, is to invite a sharpening of the senses, to feel the Shabbat delight.

In addition to the old “be fruitful and multiply” commandment and corresponding (double) mitzvah, did you know Judaism has another sex mitzvah that’s pretty much unabashedly feminist?

It’s all right there in Exodus 21:10, queens! It says that a husband is commanded to sexually satisfy his wife.

We'll say it again.... a husband is commanded to sexually satisfy his wife!

I mean... law is law...

This passage also says it’s a husband’s duty to get it on with his wife even if the couple might not be able to make babies.

Whoa, Judaism, way before your time on that one!

So next time Shabbat rolls around, one way you and your boo can honor this sacred time is by making (at least) one Shabbat lurvemaking sesh all about female pleasure. If you’re in a mixed gender partnership, that means it gets to be all about you, womangirl. If you’re in a same-gender partnership, it’s an ideal opportunity to have an intentional dialogue about What (You Two) Women Want, in bed, on the kitchen counter, or under the shower — whatever lights your fire!
