About the Artist: Emily Bowen Cohen from Los Angeles, CA
Emily is an artist and a writer. She is both Jewish and an enrolled member of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation, a Native American tribe. She uses the two different sides of her identity to explore issues of intersectionality. Her first graphic novel, Two Tribes, is forthcoming from HarperCollins / Quill Tree Books in early 2022.
“This illustration was inspired by the connections we can still create while socially distancing ourselves. It’s a fictitious Zoom circle inspired by a real-life question asked at a virtual session I attended. The leader invited us to keep an ancestor present as we talked about our current state of mind. It was such a welcoming invitation to be able to draw on the strength of my Native American and my Jewish people. Well Circles invite questions that allow a feeling of strength to coexist with vulnerability.“
